I think that this museum project has just added another layer of interest to the game. It has most certainly increased the inter-active aspects. It has also highlighted the need for Pixel to iron out the bugs with the friendship system :
I have a large number of low level/inactive friends and the only rare engine I recall picking up was Nasferatu. Yes, in the beginning there was a flurry of action but now it has settled down to three to five a day from waiting trains. I would think that the goal of the devs was to create a project that would take a long time to complete. I have all of the award locos now , just working toward those lovely placards. The level rewards are nice though!
This game has so many layers to it, and so many different ways to play, the choice is up to you.
If you choose to be non-social and play "solo" that's absolutely fine. It will take YEARS to complete. So be it.
If you choose to get involved with other players of all levels, it might take a little less time and a little more eye strain, the choice is up to the individual.
I think the whole point is to have some sense of enjoyment with this pastime, weather it be collecting trains or buildings, or friends. When it isn't any fun anymore, then it's time to walk away.
