No, you don't complete the Challenges.

You have to complete the earlier Story quests (just Quest, not total location) to continue the Event Story.

Edit:
There are some special quests to Challenges.
But the tasks in them are: just visiting to Challenges' locations.

Check it in your game, in the mapmanager » Christmas 2021, there are timers at closed locations, these tell what time will open the locations.
