As you progress in the game & move into new regions you need to strengthen the capacity & regeneration of your camp equipment.
The Professor Switch System is a very good investment.....once you start to open up your underground camp slots & accumulate pieces of camp equipment.

The quicker you can clear out all levels of your underground camp slots the better....but I would not suggest using gems to clear camp spots.
Grid Unlock Discount week comes around twice a year which gives a 20% reduction on the amount of materials needed to clear out camp slots....the next one should be due around April-May.
So it's a good idea to try to stockpile lumber, stone, bronze & iron in preparation for Grid Unlock Discount week.
Double Materials week also comes around twice a year which gives double materials on repeatable mines....the next one should be around January-February.
Double Materials week will be very helpful to provide more materials for Grid Unlock Discount week.
Double Production week also comes around twice a year which gives double the produced goods in your camp from the "Kitchen", "Foundry" & "Caravan".....the next one should be due around April-May.
This means that you get twice the food, speed potions (some old shop events), metal bars & caravan products for the same price as usual.

While there are older stories available in the shop to buy for 100 gems it's a great idea to do some of them to gain stronger capacity & regeneration camp equipment especially from the non-segmented stories.
I have produced some spreadsheets of the camp equipment available from each of the older stories available to purchase in the shop (for both 100 & 500 gems) posted in this forum thread that you may find to be of assistance.

You can buy these older stories multiple times to be able to get all the strongest camp equipment pieces available in each story....just remembered to check that you are at the required game level to access the camp equipment you are wanting.
Some of the older stories even give back more than 100 gems on the 1st play through.....there is a very useful table on this wiki page that shows how many gems can be gained from the older stories available to purchase for 100 gems.
