When I did it today, I had thought I had 11. I clicked on the symbol to throw them in. Nothing happened. So then I checked my inventory and found I only had 10. So I went off and found the last one.
When I finally had 11, I clicked the symbol ONE time, and the dragon immediately went to sleep. It's not like you throw them in one at a time and one is taken away from your inventory each time.
