What do I do to get more wood to build storage?

Do the Repeatable mines as much as possible. The Chamber of Fortune (use Green Rings) contains lumber. Could also send caeavsns, but not much is given for those. Keep an eye out for 2x Materials week, which appears periodically in the game so you get twice the lumber when digging the mines.

I can't see your current level, but once you complete the 1st quest in Isis, you'll be eligible to do the special events, which give pretty good materials.

As above although if you don't have many green rings keep them for the 2x materials week.
As for using the caravans it depends if you have alot of gold as it uses up the gold fairly quick if you're low on it or trying to have enough to get new equipment.
So repeatable mines and the Special Events are the best.
